В России есть ещё одно суеверие связанное с порогом.
Если человек вернулся домой, потому что забыл что-то, это считается плохой приметой.
Славяне считали, что выйдя из дому, человек оказывается во власти духов.
Если человек достиг своей цели, то зло отступит.
Но если он вернулся, то зря потратил силы.
Злые духи могут получить над ним власть и порог не защитит его.
Теперь ему будет сложнее выполнить задуманное.
Естественно, люди искали способы бороться с плохими приметами.
Считается, что в этом случае нужно обязательно посмотреть на себя в зеркало, это нейтрализует зло.
Можно даже показать язык своему отражению.
В России обычно для плохих примет есть средства противодействия.

Returning home due to forgetting something
There is one more superstition associated with the threshold in Russia.
If you returned home due to forgetting something, it is considered to be a bad omen.
The Slavs believed that by leaving the house, a man comes under the influence of the spirits.

目的地に着いたら、悪霊は引き下がります。
戻ってきた場合でも、その後、人の力を無駄にしています。
悪霊は彼に取り付き、敷居は彼を守りません。そうすると、目的を遂げるのが難しくなります。
当然のことながら、人々は悪い前兆に対処する方法を探していました。
この場合には、鏡で自分を見なければならないと考えられています。
それは、悪を中和するからです。鏡に映った自分にアカンベーをすることもできます。
たいてい、ロシアでは悪い前兆に逆らうすべがあります。

Порог
В России существует множество суеверий, многие из которых являются наследием язычества.
Это удивительно, потому что в России в настоящее время широко распространен монотеизм или атеизм, а язычество встречается редко.
Например, в язычестве было много суеверий связанных с порогом.
Дело в том, что славяне кремировали тела своих предков и хранили их прах под порогом.
Предполагалось, что прах и души предков будут защищать живых потомков от злых духов.
Естественно лишний раз беспокоить духи предков было нельзя.
Поэтому нельзя было наступать на порог, сидеть на нём, передавать вещи через него и многое другое.
Более того, переходить его следовало как можно быстрее и не стоять у него, поскольку он считался границей между домом и внешним миром со злыми духами.
Многие люди продолжаю соблюдать эти правила, хотя не помнят их причин.
Я думаю, что изучать причины суеверий довольно интересно.

Threshold
There are many superstitions in Russia many of which are the legacy of paganism.
This is surprising because nowadays in Russia monotheism or atheism is widespread, but paganism is rare.
For example, there is a number of superstitions associated with the threshold (of a house).
The thing is that the Slavs cremated the bodies of their ancestors and their ashes were stored under the threshold.
It was assumed that the ashes and the souls of the ancestors will protect the living descendants from the evil spirits.
Naturally the souls and the ashes shouldn't be disturbed unnecessarily.
Therefore one ought not to step on the threshold, sit on it, pass things over it and much more.
Moreover, one should cross it as quickly as possible and not stand near it because it was considered to be the boundary between house and the outside world with evil spirits.
Many people still follow these rules, though they don't remember their causes.
I think studying the reasons of superstitions is quite interesting.

der Türschwelle
Es gibt zahlreiche Aberglauben in Russland, von denen viele das Erbe des Heidentums sind.
Dies ist überraschend, weil heutzutage in Russland Monotheismus oder Atheismus weit verbreitet sind, aber das Heidentum selten ist.
Zum Beispiel gibt es eine große Anzahl von Aberglauben die mit der Türschwelle verbunden sind.
Die Tatsache ist, dass die Slawen die Leichen ihrer Vorfahren einäscherten und ihre Asche unter die Türschwelle gaben.
Es wurde angenommen, dass der Staub und die Seele der Vorfahren die lebenden Nachfahren von den bösen Geistern schützen.
Natürlich sollten die Seelen und die Asche nicht unnötig gestört werden.
Daher sollte man nicht auf die Türschwelle treten, darauf sitzen, Dinge darüber tragen und vieles mehr.
Außerdem sollte man die Türschwelle so schnell wie möglich überqueren und nicht in der Nähe stehen, weil sie als Grenze zwischen Haus und der Außenwelt mit den bösen Geistern galt.
Viele Menschen halten sich immer noch an diese Regeln, wenn sie sich an ihre Ursachen nicht erinnern.
Ich denke, die Untersuchung der Gründe des Aberglaubens ist recht interessant.

敷居(家の)
ロシアには多くの迷信があるが、その多くは異教の遺産である。
最近、ロシアの一神教や無神論が広まっていて、異教はまれなので、これは驚くべきことである。
例えば、家の敷居にかかわる迷信が数多くである。
スラヴ人は、彼らの先祖の遺体を火葬して、その灰を敷居の下に置いていた。
それは灰と先祖の魂が悪霊から子孫を保護すると考えられていた。
それは、先祖の灰と魂が生きている子孫を悪霊から守ると考えられていたためである。
当然魂と灰は必要なくかき乱すべきではない。
したがって、敷居を踏んだりそれの上に座るったり、必要以上のものを上を通すべきではない。
また、人はできるだけ早くそれを通りすぎるべきで、近くに立つべきではない。
理由は，それが家と外の悪霊の住む世界との境であると考えられていたことにある。
多くの人々は、理由を知らずに、まだその規則を守っている。
迷信の理由を調べるのは非常に面白いものだと私は思います。

Счастливые и несчастливые числа
Для меня одна из причин для изучения иностранных языков это изучение культуры других стран.
Очень интересно узнать другое мировоззрение, другие принципы поведения, другие мнения.
Один из таких интересных моментов - суеверия, например об удачных и неудачных числах.
В разных странах они разные.
Например, в России число 13 считается неудачным, впрочем большинство людей не обращает на это внимание; а число 7 должно приносить удачу.
В Испании счастливым числом считается 15.
Я слышал, что несчастливые числа в Японии - 4 и 9, а также 42 и 43.
Их прочтение одинаково с "плохими словами": смерть, мучение, умирать, мертворождённый.
А 7 приносит удачу, это верование пришло из Буддизма.
Правда ли это?
А какие бывают счастливые или несчастливые числа в других странах?

Lucky and unlucky numbers
One of the reasons for learning foreign languages for me is getting to know the culture of other countries.
Exploring other ideologies, other behavior, other opinions is very interesting.
One of these interesting things are superstitions, for example about lucky and unlucky numbers.
They differ from country to country.
For example in Russia 13 is considered as an unlucky number, though most people don't pay any attention to this; and number 7 is supposed to bring luck.
15 is a lucky number is Spain.
I heard that unlucky numbers in Japan are 4 and 9 and also 42 and 43.
Their reading is similar to "bad words": death, suffer, die, stillborn.
And number 7 brings luck, this superstition came from Buddhism.
Is this really so?
And which numbers are lucky or unlucky in other countries?

Glückliche und unglückliche Zahlen
Ein der Gründe für das Lernen von Fremdsprachen ist für mich die Möglichkeit, die Kultur anderer Länder kennen zu lernen.
Die Erforschung anderer Weltanschauungen, anderer Verhaltensweisen, anderer Meinungen ist sehr interessant.
Eine dieser interessanten Dinge ist der Aberglauben, zum Beispiel im Bezug auf Glück und Unglück bringende Zahlen.
Der Aberglaube unterscheidet sich von Land zu Land.
Zum Beispiel in Russland wird die Dreizehn als Unglückszahl betrachtet, obwohl die meisten Leute das nicht beachten.
Dafür soll die Nummer 7 Glück bringen.
15 ist eine Glückszahl in Spanien.
Ich habe gehört, dass in Japan "unglückliche Zahlen" die 4 und die 9 sind, genauso die 42 und 43.
Sie auszusprechen ist so ähnlich, wie zu fluchen: Tod, leiden, sterben, Totgeburt.
Der Aberglaube, dass die Nummer 7 Glück bringt, kommt aus dem Buddhismus.
Ist das wirklich so?
Und welche Zahlen sind Glücksbringer oder Unglück bringende Zahlen in anderen Ländern?

外国語を学ぶ理由の一つは、他の国の文化を知ることです。
他のイデオロギー、他の行動、他の意見を知ることは非常に興味深いです。
興味深いことの一つに迷信や、縁起の良い、もしくは悪い数字の例でがあります。
それらは、国によって異なる。
例えばロシアでは13が不運な数字と言われますがほとんどの人がこれに注意を払っていない、そして7は、幸運をもたらすこと言われています。
15がラッキーナンバーなのはスペインです。
私は日本での不運な数字は4と9、42と43であると聞いた。
死、苦、死ぬ、死産、これらの数字の読み方は”悪い意味の言葉”に似ています。
そして7が幸運をもたらすという迷信は仏教から来ました。
これは本当にそうでしょうか？
そして、その数字は、他の国々では幸運や不運をもらたすのでしょうか？

Осенний день
Сегодня снова идёт дождь, но тем не менее тепло. 10°C. Такая тёплая погода необычна для Москвы в ноябре. Поэтому я наслаждаюсь последними тёплыми днями осени. Листья уже опали, скоро начнётся зима. Интересно, какая она будет? В последние годы зимой обычно бывает мало снега и не очень холодно (~-10°C). Я люблю, когда зимой много снега. Надеюсь, что зима будет хорошей.

Autumn day

Today it rained again, but nevertheless it is warm. 10°C. Such a warm weather is uncommon for Moscow in November. And so I enjoy the last warm days of the autumn. The leaves have already fallen, the winter is coming. I wonder what will be the winter this year... In recent years it isn't very cold (~-10°C) and there is little snow mostly. I like snowy winters. I hope this winter will be good.

Herbsttag

Heute regnet es wieder, aber nichtsdestoweniger ist es warm. 10°C. Solch warmes Wetter ist ungewöhnlich fur Moskau im November. Und so genieße ich die letzten warmen Tage des Herbstes. Die Blätter sind bereits gefallen, der Winter steht vor der Tür. Ich frage mich, wie wird der Winter in diesem Jahr ... In den letzten Jahren war es nicht sehr kalt (~ -10 ° C) und es gab meistens wenig Schnee. Ich mag schneereiche Winter. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Winter gut wird.

Quadrilingual post 1.

I have been writing on lang-8 for some time and can say that this is really great. I practice to formulate my thoughts in German and Japanese which is a necessary skill. And then I receive corrections, which facilitate the language learning a lot. Thanks to corrections I learned a lot about grammar, uses of the words etc.

From now on I'll write here my corrected posts from lang-8, so that I don't lose them. And maybe they will be of some interest to other people.

First several posts will be really simple, but later they'll become more complicated.

Изучение языков
Вчера была хорошая погода, но сегодня идёт дождь. Я не хочу гулять, поэтому изучаю языки дома. Я учу немецкий и японский. Это трудно, но очень интересно. Я редко использую словарь, когда читаю немецкие новости, потому что понимаю их довольно хорошо. Но японский я знаю хуже немецкого. Мне нужно больше практиковаться, поэтому я каждый день читаю что-нибудь на японском. Я хочу хорошо выучить оба этих языка.


Learning languages
The weather yesterday was good, but today it rains. I don't want to go for a walk, so I learn languages at home. I learn German and Japanese. This is difficult but very interesting. While reading German news I seldom use the dictionary, because I understand them rather well. But my Japanese is worse than my German. I need to practice more, that's why I read something in Japanese every day. I want to learn both these languages well.


Sprachen studieren
Das Wetter war gestern gut, aber heute regnet es. Ich möchte nicht spazieren gehen, deswegen bleibe ich zu Hause und lerne Sprachen. Ich lerne Deutsch und Japanisch. Es ist schwer aber sehr interessant. Ich benutze selten das Wörterbuch beim Lesen deutscher Nachrichten, weil ich sie ziemlich gut verstehe. Aber mein Japanisch ist schlechter. Ich muss mehr üben, deshalb lese ich täglich etwas auf Japanisch. Ich möchte die beiden Sprachen gut lernen.

昨日はいい天気だった、でも今日は雨が降っている。外へ出歩きたくないので私は言語外国語を勉強している。日本語とドイツ語を勉強します。これは難しいけどとても面白い。ドイツのニュースを読みながら、僕はかなりよくそれを理解できテイルと思っている。なので、私は、辞書を使うことはほとんどありません。しかし日本語よりドイツ語がよくわかります。私はもっと練習する必要があるので毎日私は日本語で何かをを読みます。私は両方の言語をいい学びたい。

Tools to facilitate language learning while reading foreign texts

Those who learn foreign languages sooner or later reach a point in the target language at which they aim mostly to expand their vocabulary. This is a never ending process, but sometimes we want do this intensively. So what are the best ways for this? I think they are communicating with native speakers and reading.
People often don't have enough time or possibilities to communicate with native speakers, so reading is the best option.
And here appears a question: how should I read materials in the target language? Should I look up every new word in a dictionary? Should I look up only the necessary words? How should I do this?
The problem is that even the most interesting texts can become boring if you stop every several words to use the dictionary or if you understand only a fraction of the texts.
One of the answers to this is pop-up dictionaries: you just hover over the word and see the translation. This is wonderful (well, if you don't overuse it)! But how do I remember these words? Copying them in a separate file is a pain in the ass! And reading this list of words again and again? Tedious! More than that: if you just read a word and it's translation, you won't learn how it is really used. And copying the whole sentences in this list is too monotonous.

But there are amazing people who develop various tools to help language learners. And these tools are completely free. This just can't stop amazing me. So I'll present several of those.

1. This is just a simple pop-up dictionary for Google Chrome:

You double click (or use another hot key) and see the translation. I suppose similar addons exist for all browsers.

2. Learning with texts.
This is an ultimate tool for learning any language.
Installing it is a bit puzzling, but you need to do it just once :) And the instructions are very detailed.
So what is it about? Here is the gist of it:

You choose the target language (the number of them is unlimited), set the preferences (such as a dictionary to be used) and add texts of your choice. You can the translation for each separate words or for phrases. You choose the translation you like (from the default dictionary of from the one you prefer) and then in this texts and in all new texts you will see the translation which you set. So the word is saved with the term, translation and an example sentence. You can mark the word as known or ignore the word - then it will be displayed with a white font. You can also mark a word on the grade from 1 to 5 (how good do you know it) and it will be displayed with the appropriate color.
If you know some/many/most of the words in a text you don't need to set translations for them: just translate the new words and in the end just press "I know all" - the remaining words will be marked as "Well known".
There is a downside though: the tool doesn't recognize forms of words. So, for example "run" and "ran" are different words. But is this really a downside? You can use this to improve grammar: you can write how and why this form of word is created. And there is still the button "I know all".
And there are much more features. For example you can create a version of the text with translations above words:

Here I display the translation of the words which I'm learning. Pretty useful!
Also you can import the words, for example in an appropriate format to use in Anki!

There are other features, but I think even the mentioned ones are worth trying. For me this is a great tool to study any non-hieroglyphic language. Sadly this tool isn't too good with Japanese. There are two reasons:

• There are no spaces between the words in Japanese, so I have to manually choose the beginning and ending of the each word; this takes too much time;
• Words in Japanese language have too many conjugations, so this creates additional problems.

Nevertheless this tool is great for other languages. For now it's my main appliance in learning German.

3. Rikaisama (an addon for Firefox; works for Windows and Linux)
You read a Japanese text online and want to know the translation of a word? Rikaisama is here for you:

You just move the mouse to the word and the pop-up translation appears!
Great, but this isn't the best feature. While the pop-up is active you can press a button to save the word+reading+meaning+sentence to a file on you PC! And there is more: you can press another button and immediately create a new card in Anki! This is wonderful - I see the translation, I save the word and I can review it later.

But what if you want to do the similar thing offline?
There is another tool.

4. Yomichan
It has almost the same functionality as Rikaisama:

You open a file, hover over the words and create new cards in Anki for them. It is also of great use for me.

So these are the main tools I use now. Hope they could help many more people.

Learning Japanese again

So after 3-4 months break I learn Japanese again.
Well it's not that I completely dropped Japanese for these months: I continued reviews in Anki, I read Japanese posts in Twitter and so on, but it took me less then an hour/day - you can call this language learning, can't you?

So what am I doing now?
First of all I refresh my grammar knowledge and improve it.

In a span of two weeks I went through all the lessons in this wonderful site:
http://japanese.lingualift.com/

These lessons provide a detailed information about many grammar points and give many examples, often in a form of dialogues. What I really liked are cultural notes about Japan, they were really interesting.
Also the site gives possibility to learn kana, kanji and vocabulary, but I personally prefer to use other resources for this.
And why two weeks? Because there is a free trial for 14 days :) In these two weeks I took the information I needed, so there was no need to use premium.

Now I use Tae Kim's grammar guide again - well, it covers most grammar, so what else could I wish for?

And now (after the time spend on learning German) I realized that grammar practice is necessary.

For practicing conjugations I use an Android App. It's not a big app, but it does what it is supposed to do - helps to train conjugations skills.

I'm still not sure how to practice more sophisticated grammar, it seems Anki is the answer.


Besides I still follow several Japanese in Twitter and read their posts. Recently I began listening and reading easy Japanese news.

To increase immersion recently I even changed the language of my browser and the language on my tablet to Japanese. But I can bring myself to change the language on my PC to Japanese yet :)


I think I'll spend around a month on grammar.

Then I'll try writing in Japanese on lang-8 and reading manga or something more difficult than manga.

Learning German-2

So the month is ending and I took the test again - now I had a success and reached level B2.

So this is what did I do to improve me German:

• Went through ten lessons for B2 in Deutsche Welle (for both reading and listening practice);
• Practiced the grammar topics with which I had problems earlier;
• Wrote several posts in the language exchange sites and got them corrected.

For now I am satisfied with my knowledge of German. I'll continue to practice it from time to time - by reading articles and writing posts in the language exchange sites.
Now I'll take a rest and then return to studying Japanese. Can't wait for it :)

Learning German/Deutsch studieren

So I have been studying German for 3 weeks using the site Duolingo (if you are interested, you can see my profile here).
And then I decided to test myself. There is a great website Deutsche Welle, where you can read German news and learn German language. And you can take a test there, which is based on the CEFR. I took a test for the B1 level and received 72%, then I tried B2 level but received only 50%.
So I can say that my level of German is between intermediate and upper intermediate now.
I suppose it isn't bad, but I want to challenge myself - by the end of the month I'll try to reach the B2 level. So ahead of me are 10 days of intense and fun (as I hope) studying.

Ich habe Deutsch dieser Monst studiert in Duolingo (Sie können mein Profil hier sehen).
Und heute mochte ich mich prüfen. Es gibt eine gute Website Deutsche Welle - Man kann hier die Nachrichten lesen und Deutsch lernen. Und Man kann hier ein Test machen. Der Test ist auf CEFR basiert. Ich erhaltet 72% auf der B1 Ebene und 50% aud der B2 Ebene.
So bin ich zwischen Mittelmaß und gutes Mittelmaß.
Das ist nicht schlecht aber ich mochte mich herausfordern - Ich mochte B2 Ebene bis Oktober erreichen.
Ich habe nun 10 Tagen des Lernens, ich hoffe das macht Spaß.
